ANDERSON – Two Anderson children are among three people found dead shortly before 1:15 p.m. on Sunday in a Marion home.
Marion Police Chief Angela Haley in a prepared statement confirmed the deaths of Javon Blackwell Jr., 12, and Jayzon Blackwell, 11, and their father, Javon Blackwell Sr., 42, were being investigated as homicides.
According to the Marion Chronicle-Tribune newspaper, Grant County Coroner Chris Butche said each died of gunshot wounds. Investigators asked that the location of the wounds not be released.
The deceased were found dead in a home at 2307 S. Gallatin St.
The children's school, Anderson Preparatory Academy, released the following statement: “The Anderson Preparatory Academy family is devastated by the loss of two of our students, Javon Blackwell Jr. and Jayzon Blackwell. Our thoughts and prayers are with their mother, family and friends. Counselors will be made available for all students, families and faculty, with more information to be forthcoming.”
Commander Jill Barker, superintendent of Anderson Preparatory Academy, said the school is working with the family, and she expects to schedule a schoolwide memorial at a later date.
“It’s unexpected and shocking that that can happen to our kiddos,” she said tearfully.
She described Javon and Jayzon as very good boys.
“They loved art class,” she said.
Barker said she was not aware of any problems within the family that would have resulted in such an extreme outcome.
APA has been working on an initiative this year with a family liaison to help students deal with the issues in their home lives, Barker said.
“We know the world is not always the safest place for them, so we’re trying to change that,” she said.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Marion Police Department at (765) 662-9981.
