ALEXANDRIA — A 22-year-old man died early Sunday morning after being struck by a patrol car driven by an Alexandria police officer.
Madison County Coroner Dr. Troy Abbott identified the deceased as Dylan Kelly Stinson.
Officer Zachary Taylor was driving the marked patrol car southbound in the 1000 block of Indiana 9 about 2:20 a.m. when the car struck Stinson, according to Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger and Alexandria Police Chief Terry Richwine.
The chief said initial evidence indicates Stinson was skateboarding along the highway near the entrance to Beulah Park when the accident occurred.
“There were two victims in this,” Richwine said, alluding to Stinson and Taylor. “Our hearts go out to both victims and both families.”
Taylor, who became a full-time Alexandria police officer this month, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the sheriff’s crash team.
Records show that Taylor is a 2014 graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, according to the sheriff. As required by state law in any fatal crash, blood was drawn from Taylor to check for the presence of alcohol or drugs. Results are pending.
Taylor previously worked for the Edgewood Police Department, Richwine said.
