ANDERSON -- Roosevelt Wilkerson, 76, was called from earth to glory on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.
He was born in Sardis, Ala., to the late Willie and Willie Mae (Davis) Wilkerson on June 21, 1938. At the age of 11, he moved to Anderson with his family. He attended Anderson Public Schools and graduated from Anderson High School.
He retired from Delphi (General Motors) after 44 years of service and was a committed member of UAW 662.
Later in life, Roosevelt committed his life to Christ and was united in fellowship with Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. At Bethesda he served as an usher and was a member of the Brotherhood ministry.
Roosevelt was united in marriage to Margaret Bledsoe. This union was blessed with three sons, Bernard Wilkerson (deceased), Louie (Margaret) Wilkerson, Indianapolis, and Christopher (Becky) Wilkerson, Hastings, Minn. Later, he married Doris Nave, the love of his life. Through this union he was blessed with three stepsons, Thomas (Louise) Steans, Indianapolis, the Rev. Bryant (Roshell) Steans, Decatur, Ga., and Carlos Greer (Aeriel), Anderson. He was the grandfather of 20 and great-grandfather of 15. He has five brothers, Lovell (Annie) Wilkerson and Jesse (Joanne) Wilkerson, Anderson, David (Tresea) Wilkerson,Tampa, Fla., Robert Wilkerson and Odell (Lois) Wilkerson, Anderson; and three sisters, Juanita (Freddie Sr.) Cottrell, Anderson, and Adelle Wade and Kathy (Jim) Harris of Anderson.
Roosevelt enjoyed several hobbies. Among them were fishing, bowling, softball and dancing. In high school he played football and ran track. He also played on the Sherman Street Church of God basketball league coached by Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Williams. Roosevelt loved people and would readily converse with anyone he met.
Roosevelt was preceded in death by his father, Willie Wilkerson; son, Bernard Wilkerson; sisters, Wilma Wilkerson and Christine (Wilkerson) Harris; brothers, William ‘L’il Buddy’ and John D. Wilkerson; and grandchildren Dytika D. Wilkerson and Shayla Steans.
The service of celebration will be at noon this Saturday at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, 2124 Cedar St., Anderson, with Pastor Floyd Edwards officiating. The eulogy will be offered by Pastor Bryant Steans.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in Anderson Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be contributed to Alzheimer associations.
The family of Roosevelt Wilkerson wishes to express thanks for all expressions of love.
