Alexandria Firefighters Local 1649 has joined with the Alexandria Fire Department in a mission to make sure every residence in our response area has a working smoke detector.

Anyone who needs a working smoke detector can obtain one from the fire department. Visit 212 N. Harrison St. in Alexandria to pick one up or call 724-2195, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily and a detector will be delivered to you. If necessary, installation will be provided.

Proper placement is on the ceiling, close to the sleeping quarters. Placement in or near the kitchen should be avoided due to the probability of false alarms. Every smoke detector in the home should be tested once a month, and batteries should be replaced every six months.

Any individual or business willing to help with this mission can do so by contacting Fire Chief Bruce Waters (724-2195). Checks should be make payable to: Alexandria Firefighters Local 1649.
