Members of the Anderson Fire Department wish to thank the citizens of Anderson for being conscientious during the 4th of July week. Statistics show that fireworks and related injuries are on an increase throughout the nation, and changes in Indiana state law made fireworks more readily available. However, the Anderson Fire Department medic units reported that they did not pick up one patient due to fireworks related injuries during the week of the fourth.

We feel this is attributed to public awareness as a result of our fire prevention programs and/or the public media. Whatever the case may be, our citizens were responsible in the use of their fireworks this year and should be proud of that fact. This is significant because each year thousands of children under 19 are fireworks victims. Firecrackers, sparklers and bottle rockets can burn from 150 to 1200 degrees, which will cause severe burns.

So, to our citizens of Anderson, thanks for a job well done.

And — this reminder — always remember to check your smoke detectors.
