FRANKTON — With four starters graduating from last year’s 15-7 team and a first-year head coach taking over the program, Frankton’s Jon Gardner admits he had reservations about his senior season as fall practice approached.

But it took just a few short weeks to put those fears to rest.

Gardner has been impressed with how hard his younger teammates have worked in practice, and he’s excited about the leadership ability of fellow seniors Daniel Farley and Brandon Gore.

“I’m happy,” Gardner said. “I’m ready to get going.”

The senior post player likely will have plenty to say about how far the Eagles go. He averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game a year ago, and he could carry an even greater load this winter.

“We were very competitive (last year),” head coach Brent Brobston said. “Gardner and Farley saw the most extensive playing time (among the returning players). We had a very experienced team last year, and we had a nice season.”

Starters Cameron Breckenridge, Steven Browning, Ben Hudson and Stedman Graves have graduated.

Junior Zach Doughty joins the three seniors as returning lettermen, and Brobston expects to get contributions from a trio of newcomers — sophomore Adam Hendricks and juniors Carson Breckenridge and Evan Spaulding, a transfer who played for Anderson’s junior varsity team last year.

Brobston coached Frankton’s girls team last season, and the experience has helped in his new role.

“It’s been a smooth transition,” he said. “I know the kids pretty well.”

Familiarity is a major theme with the Eagles.

Gardner points out many of the players came up through Frankton’s system together and have been good friends for years.

“It makes things a lot easier,” he said. “I’d rather play with them than probably anybody else.”

That cohesiveness has led to some very good early practices.

“We have a great group of young men,” Brobston said. “They work extremely hard, and they’re doing a great job.”

Gardner, Farley and Gore have led the way. They’ve quickly stepped into their leadership roles, and Brobston is already seeing results.

“The younger kids see how hard Jon and the seniors work, and it makes them want to work even harder,” he said.

There could be plenty of hard work ahead.

Many of the Eagles will be learning on the fly throughout the season, and Brobston said his goal is for the team to improve with each game and be at its best for the sectional.

The postseason isn’t far from Gardner’s mind. He’s aware of Frankton’s history, and he knows how he’d like his high school career to end.

“Our school has never won a sectional,” he said. “That would be pretty exciting.”
