INDIANAPOLIS — Matt Howard scored 15 points and Butler held off a Ball State rally late in the first half for a 64-55 victory Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs (2-0) led by 12 early in the game, but the Cardinals (1-1) pulled within 31-29 after a 3-pointer by Brandon Lampley and then a layup at the halftime buzzer by Eric Wormley.
A 3-pointer by Ronald Nored started a 9-0 Butler run at the beginning of the second half, and the Bulldogs stayed in front the rest of the way.
Garrett Butcher and Gordon Hayward added 9 points each for Butler.
Anthony Newell led Ball State with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Jarrod Jones added 14 points and 12 rebounds.
