Anderson Preparatory Academy’s De’Vaughn Wright will become the first all-star for the school today when the senior takes the court as part of the 2012 Indiana East/West All-Star Games.
Wright will play for the East team in the 1A/2A game at 2 p.m. at Jay County Junior High School in Portland.
“It’s an exciting thing for us as a school but it’s more exciting for De’Vaughn,” APA athletic director David Bradford. “He’s worked very hard athletically and academically to get himself in position to graduate.”
In their first full varsity season, the APA Jets finished with a record of 5-15.
Wright averaged 10 points a night and was the Jets leading rebounder with an average of 7.5 rebounds per game.
“It’s such a great thing for the program,” said Vaughn’s high school coach Rob Curry. “With APA not being (eligible) to play in the sectional, it’s nice to see him get some recognition. I look forward to him getting the opportunity to play.”
Curry recently stepped down as head coach.
Under the bylaws of the IHSAA, APA will not be eligible for postseason play until the 2015-16 school year.
Also representing Madison County will be Lapel junior Drew Norton.
The Bulldogs forward will play for the East squad in the underclassmen game at noon.
During the 2011-12 campaign, Norton was the Bulldogs leading scorer with an average of 14.5 points per contest. The 6-foot-4 junior pulled in 115 rebounds in 22 games (5.2 RPG) this past season.
