The 15th-ranked Highland girls tennis team kept its dream season afloat in a big way Thursday by shutting out visiting Frankton, 5-0, in a first-round sectional match.

Singles winners for the Scots (21-0) were Alex Hammel at No. 1, Mercy Scott at No. 2 and Abby Beard at No. 3.

Two more Highland points were picked up in doubles as the No. 1 team of Kelsey McFadden and Ashlan Allison prevailed, as did Emily Jones and Alaina Coplin at No. 2.

The Scots now take on Anderson (8-0) today for the sectional title. The match is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at the Highland courts.

Anderson advanced to today’s sectional finale by defeating Elwood, 4-1.

Singles players Meaghan Ellis and Martha Byer and doubles combinations of Brittany Woschitz and Alex Thanas and Taylor Wilson and Marissa Woschitz posted victories for the Indians.

Elwood’s point came from No. 2 singles player Miranda Green.



Delta 4, Alexandria 1

Alexandria’s fine season came to a close at the hands of traditional powerhouse Delta on the Eagles’ home courts.

The Tigers, who finished with a 15-5 record, received their point from No. 2 singles player Abbe Cox, who won her match by a score of 6-2, 6-1.



Greenfield-Central 3, Pendleton Heights 2

The Arabians couldn’t quite close the deal in the first round of the Mount Vernon Sectional, losing to the Cougars to complete a 6-10 season.

Wins for Pendleton Heights were produced by No. 1 singles player Jordan Safford and the No. 2 doubles pairing of Beth Pluhar and Esta Henderson.



Raiders to play today

Shenandoah will play today against the New Castle-Tri winner in a match that was originally scheduled for Thursday.

The match between the Trojans and Titans was postponed from Wednesday because of rain.
